I Know a Guy Who Was Far From God

1

I know a guy who lived so far from God that he couldn’t even see the light from his Father’s house anymore. Alcohol had become his god, his comfort, his prison. Every morning brought the same cycle—promises to change, moments of clarity swallowed by the darkness of another drink, another broken promise to his wife, another disappointment in his children’s eyes.

This man’s relationship with God wasn’t just strained—it was shattered. How do you pray when shame weighs heavier than hope? How do you approach the throne of grace when you’re convinced you’ve used up all your chances?

His marriage was crumbling. His children learned to tiptoe around Dad’s “bad days.” The man who was supposed to be their rock had become their source of uncertainty.

He tried everything. Four different in-house rehabilitation programs. Countless intensive outpatient treatments. He sat in the rooms of AA, searching for the key that would unlock his freedom. Good programs, caring people, proven methods that had helped so many others… but for him, sobriety remained elusive.

Every failed attempt added another layer of shame. Maybe he wasn’t trying hard enough. Maybe he was beyond help. Maybe this was just who he was destined to be.

Oh, but the grace of God…

When every human method had been exhausted, when hope was nearly gone, God stepped in with a miracle that no program could provide. In one divine moment, He reached down and lifted the burden of alcohol from this man’s shoulders. Instantly. Completely. The craving that had survived every treatment, every meeting, every desperate prayer, simply… disappeared.

Where addiction had lived, peace moved in. Where shame had made its home, purpose began to grow.

Oh, but the grace of God…

This same man who once chased money and lived for weekend parties found his heart completely transformed. The pursuit of wealth became a pursuit of wisdom. The craving for temporary highs was replaced with a hunger for eternal truths. God didn’t just remove the bad—He filled the emptiness with something beautiful.

Oh, but the grace of God…

Who specializes in the ministry of reconciliation. Broken relationships don’t stay broken when grace gets involved. A wife learned to trust again. Children discovered their dad’s laugh. A man found his way back to conversations with his Heavenly Father that weren’t filled with apologies, but with gratitude.

And now? Now this man serves the God who saved him, not out of obligation, but because after experiencing such undeserved love, how could he do anything else? God continues to expand his territory of service, opening doors he never thought he’d walk through, using a story he once wanted to hide as a beacon of hope for others.

As he remained faithful to every ministry God entrusted to him, something incredible happened. Just recently, when this man thought he had already experienced the fullness of God’s goodness…

Oh, but the grace of God…

Reached down once again and healed his body in ways that left doctors amazed and his heart overflowing with even deeper gratitude. Another miracle. Another reminder that our God is not finished writing our stories.

You probably figured out by now that “this guy” is me. This is my story—a story I once thought was too broken to be beautiful, too messy to be used by God.

But grace has a way of taking our worst chapters and turning them into someone else’s hope.

This is just the beginning of what God has done. In upcoming posts, I’ll share the full story of my deliverance from alcohol, the miracle that left doctors speechless, and the power of persistent prayer that changed everything. Stay tuned—there’s so much more to this testimony.
